Location and Setting
- Ashtaroth was located in the northern Transjordan east of the Sea of Galilee, near the
ancient city of Edrei.
- The city was probably named for the Canaanite goddess of fertility, love, and war. It
became a center dedicated to the worship of Ashtaroth.
Historical and Biblical Significance
- Og, the king of Bashan, who lived at Ashtaroth (Deut 1:4; 3:10), was defeated during
Joshuas conquest of the Transjordan (Josh 12:4). The Israelites apparently had
difficulty maintaining control of the city, however, because it was listed among the
territories not yet secured by the end of Joshuas life (Josh 13:12).
- Ashtaroth was designated a Levitical city (1 Chr 6:71; Josh 21:27).
- After the Assyrians conquered the city, its name was changed to Karnaiym. Again it
became a center for pagan worship, a practice which continued until the Maccabees
conquered the city in 165 B.C. (1 Macc 5:44).
